The Enfield Living Memorial project has created a living tribute for those lost locally during the covid pandemic. It marks the collective loss and bereavement of the people of Enfield with a glade of trees in the shape of a heart, an emblematic sculpture made in the shape of a phoenix.
The completed memorial creates a place for personal and collective reflection for everyone who visits the site. It aims to create a way to acknowledge loss and grief during one of the most traumatic events of our collective generation.

Enfield Covid Memorial

THE VISION

The memorial is a heart shape spread of trees over thirty metres wide as a place of solace in honour of people lost during the coronavirus pandemic. The sculpture of a phoenix will provide a symbolic inauguration – the image of the phoenix offers an open idea of acceptance of loss and renewal at the same moment. The trees will then encompass a permanent phoenix artwork in the same location.

THE LOCATION: ENFIELD TOWN PARK

The site was chosen after months of looking through various public spaces in Enfield. The park stands at the very centre of our Borough, but importance was also given to nearby facilities, parking and easy public transport access from all parts of the Borough. There were also practical limitations and technical issues of each space we looked at. You can visit the site by bus with any number stopping at Enfield Town high street or at Genotin Road, both only a short walk to the park. Extensive Car parking is also available, the closest being Palace Gardens Car park on Sarnesfield Road.

FUNDING AND SUPPORT

Inspired by a project in Liverpool the Enfield Living Memorial project is being facilitated by a small working group. Initiated by the Enfield Soroptimist’s and working with local artist Joe Robinson the group consists of local partners. They worked together to raise funds and deliver the project as a whole but were reliant on the good will and generosity of everyone across Enfield.

The memorial was officially inaugurated on Sunday September 24th, 2023. Some additional work and micro-events are planned for the future.

STORY BEHIND THE PROJECT

Inspired by a project in Liverpool the Enfield Living Memorial project is being facilitated by a small working group. Initiated by the Enfield Soroptimist’s and working with local artist Joe Robinson the group consists of local partners, including the Council and the Friends of the park group. They are working together to raise funds and deliver the project as a whole but are reliant on the good will and generosity of everyone across Enfield.

There is a lot of interest in the project but we are limited to the degree which we can involve everyone. Yet as the project develops we aim to provide a range of open activities where all can come, especially those affected by the pandemic, and play a part in shaping this memorial.

If in the short term you wish to help and be a part of the project we simply ask people to help raise the funding needed. Every contribution whether one pound or one hundred pounds is of equal merit because every donation plays a part in creating this public memorial.
Amongst the hundreds of individuals who have already supported us we have scores of organisations helping us.
