After months of planning the first spade finally went into the soil on Friday March 18th. Our initial hope had been to involve sections of the public in planting the trees but the uncertainties with Covid in the past few months made it unclear if we could do this. Time was not on our side as the trees had to go in before April growth started. Having already approached Capel Manor College to assist with the public planting they have now stepped in lock, stock, spade, and wheelbarrow to make it happen before we run out of time. You may have seen groups of students in the past weeks carrying, digging, shifting turf, pounding in stakes, finally mulching, and watering the new trees. It’s been an amazing site and a huge effort, but finally the heart of trees is starting to grow around.
Our sincere thanks to Capel and all the students and staff that joined in to help make this crucial job a success. Other planting opportunities, open to the public, will take place in future with ideas for flowers to accompany the trees.
